FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I measure a crimped ring to be sure it is crimped correctly? A: Each PEX crimping tool is provided with a GO gauge. All of the ring sizes are on one gauge. If the ring is within the specifications (see Table) the GO gauge will fit over it. If the GO gauge does not fit over the ring (don’t measure on the bump where the crimper jaws meet), then the ring is not sufficiently crimped. This ring should be cut off and replaced. Since incorrect crimps can deform fittings as well as rings, always use a new fitting if you have to make a new crimp.

Q: Do I have to use the tool provided by the manufacturer of the pipe and fitting to get a good crimp seal? A: No. All PEX pipe and fittings are manufactured in accordance with the ASTM 1807 standard, and crimps on PEX rings must meet the same standard. Crimped rings conform to that standard when you use any Crimpmaker™ tool.

Q: Can the Crimpmaker™ tools be repaired? A: Mil3 repair costs made it more economical for the customer to order a new replacement tool. We also offer repair kits to the customer for all tools.

Q: I see a very small bump across my crimped ring where the jaws of the Crimpmaker™ come together. Is this a problem? A: No, all copper ring crimpers will leave some jaw closure seam. This does not affect the seal of the crimp. A ring crimped within specified dimensions (measured by gauge) will always seal correctly. The ASTM specification for PEX and polybutylene pipe crimping states not to measure crimped ring dimensions at the “bump.”

Q: I have a tool that looks like a Crimpmaker™, but it has different or no markings. Can this tool be replaced with a Crimpmaker™ tool ? A: Yes, our tools perform mechanically the same way as other, look-alike tools (which are actually knock-offs of our original patented tools). Plumbers all tell us that Crimpmaker™ tools are superior in performance and long-term reliability.

Q: Where is the Crimpmaker™ made? A: The Crimpmaker™ is built in the United States, as it has been since 1992.

Q: How do I know this is a reliable tool? A: These tools have been purchased by professional plumbers through plumbing wholesalers since 1992. Almost one million Crimpmaker tools have been sold in the US, Canada and beyond.

Q: I have lost parts of my tool. Can I purchase parts separately? A: Yes, we have repair kits available plus individual parts available for a few items. These can all be seen on our website at pexcrimpusa.com.

Q: Will Crimpmaker™ tools work on stainless steel sleeves? A: Mil3 does make a Crimpmaker™ that will crimp 1/2" and 3/4" stainless sleeves. These can be purchased on our webstore.

Q: Can I use the Crimpmaker™ on polybutylene pipe and fittings? A: The tool can be used on polybutylene wherever polybutylene pipe is allowed for potable water pipe or radiant heating installation.
